Portal Spiral Monolith
Well Projects is excited to present ‘Portal Spiral Monolith’, an exhibition of new works by Bones Tan Jones. In ‘Portal Spiral Monolith’, Bones Tan Jones presents two new works exploring tools for divination. Looking back at their ancestors, various tools have been passed down as a way of divining the future or interpreting events; yarrow branches, coins, bones and more. Flash forward to our technologized present, the tools that shape our decision making have been replaced by automated systems and new methods of computational sensing. At the center of these opposing processes lies a belief in connection to something beyond yourself; of intangible forces that can be tapped into, offering a pathway to new knowledge. In ‘Portal Spiral Monolith’ Tan Jones Explores how these systems of knowledge can be situated next to each other in contemporary contexts, the ones and zeros present in both the I ching and binary code finding a common ground.
The Algae-rhythmic pendulum, a large work based on pendulum dowsing, and word play on the word algorithm, the pendulum is made of living algae, and responds to the movements and energies of the people in the space.
Portal Spiral Monolith Oracle cards, a set of oracle cards created by Bones. The cards are poetic and prophetic. As the show evolves, more cards will be added, until the full 52 card deck is present. As you enter you are invited to create your own pendulum to dowse your way around the show, sensing the minute movements of the pendulum which may change direction when you are closer to different cards, this is your reading. The meanings of the cards are readable via the below QR code.
- You’re invite to create your own pendulum to dowse your way around the show
- Take a piece of clay and attach it to the end of a piece of string to create a weight
- Hold the pendulum in one hand hanging down until it is still
- Ask a question you know the answer to, and observe the direction the pendulum swings in. This gives you the directions for yes or no
- Take your time walking around the space, asking the pendulum is this the right card for me?
