Description

Well Projects is excited to present Time Is With Me Now a solo presentation of paintings by India Nielsen. Time Is with Me Now travels through a series of vivid gloopy spaces populated by animal stares, deathly presences and capybara romance.

Nielsen’s harmonious and energetic approach to painting, characterised by heavy texture and transparent fluid strokes captures a series of unusual subjects, none of them are human. Instead we see animal forms or elemental events or spectral creatures. The works here all seem to share a common story, with something ominous underpinning their glossy surfaces. Frightening things sit next to rainbow vistas and impasto sentences remind you of the overwhelming sensation of being alive. The trees flourish and bloom whilst buildings burn and happy skeletons zoom off into the sunset.

A childhood of pop culture indulgence (think MTV and Powerpuff Girls) against a backdrop of strict Roman Catholicism created the conditions for Nielsen’s visual language to begin to develop, helping to carry through a ‘compulsion to consider images as magical, transportive objects’. Although littered with symbols of death or destruction, the supernatural spaces of Nielsens paintings, that sit somewhere between the internet culture of the 2000s and a journey into the afterlife, find a kind of buoyancy or hopefulness in the affection and exuberance of their non-human inhabitants. Freed from their corporeal forms and at home in their love for one another.
