In ‘Roadside Fire’ you are confronted with an overwhelming blaze. Embers coalesce within an ambient glow that maps a paradoxically fluid landscape; the strange beauty of destructive force is fixed within a flowing visual language that is typical of Luke Silva’s work.
Silva often returns to the devastation of the forest fire, having lost his family home in the Portuguese wildfires of 2015. In ‘Roadside Fire’ Silva adopts images from BBC news coverage of the Portuguese wildfires – ‘As some of the first images distributed around the world it has long held a macabre sense of fascination’. Lifting material from news sites and video games, Silva finds ways of mediating personal experience through explorations of recognisable images. In doing so Silva taps into an oblique line of sight that engages with both the biographical and the global.
